Contemporary #Romance Review ~ Brushing Off the Boss (Half Moon Bay, Book #2) by Annie Seaton @EntangledPub

The one passion they had in common was the one that would keep them apart. Artist Sienna Sacchi is about to have everything she's ever dreamed of, when sexy playboy Jack Montgomery comes strolling back into her life as the owner of her gallery. Her plan to buy it herself ruined, she refuses to let him interfere with the most important thing-her debut exhibition. But Jack's not just taking over her workplace, he's also intruding on her art studio, her home, and maybe even her heart. Jack Montgomery has few rules for his carefree life, but never mixing business with pleasure is one he is determined to keep. He'd planned on finally satisfying the tension between him and Sienna, but discovering he's her boss puts an immediate end to that. Unfortunately, being forced to share a tiny apartment with the gorgeous, tempting sculptor is pushing Jack to his limits. One brush with desire could ruin everything they've worked for.

My Review:

Sierra Sacchi has big plans that involve purchasing the gallery she currently manages. All she's waiting for is the paperwork to be sent to her lawyer. In the meantime, she's setting up her very first art exhibition in the very gallery she's planning to purchase. When Jack Montgomery, a blast from her past, breezes into town, her future becomes less certain. The pair discover that besides having full-blown steamy chemistry, Jack is Sierra's new boss. As such, it seems her plans to own the gallery are shattered, and her very first exhibition may not even happen.

Brushing Off the Boss was a fun contemporary romance. The character development and world building were well done. Each character was fully developed and realistic while the descriptive prose allowed me to see the scenes described on the pages. Jack and Sierra seemed like opposites at the beginning but as their friendship and romance build, they find many things they have in common. I love the art aspect of the story and enjoyed reading about Jack and Sierra.

I enjoyed the author's writing style and found Brushing Off the Boss to be a quick, smooth read. I was never lost or confused about any part of the story. I love how the author tossed in a plot twist to keep the reader on their toes. It didn't detract from the romance and enhanced the story. I was drawn in, engaged, and entertained from beginning to end.

Read an Excerpt:

It’s 2021. The pandemic drags on and we’re all stuck inside. Blegh. Reality sucks.

So why not take this opportunity to escape into fiction?

A year ago we ran a contest and we asked writers to submit stories set in other times, places, and versions of reality. Then we had our judges pick the best ones to include in this anthology.

Therefore, the seven stories you are about to read are windows into other worlds, but also into the minds of eight extremely creative and talented individuals. We’ve included their bios and a few words from each of them so you can get to know the people who have created such imaginative stories to take us far, far away, if only for a little while.

So pack your bags, or don’t because you won’t be needing them for this journey. Instead, sit back, relax, and turn the page to find distant galaxies, alien cultures, mysterious magical islands, unknown planets, the value of colour, the fragility of time, and the fickle nature of fate.

My Review:

Far, Far Away is a fantastic collection of scifi and fantasy stories. If you are looking to get lost in a variety of stories grab a copy of this book. I found myself absorbed by the stories, loving the variations in genre, location, culture, and scifi and fantasy themes.

I don't want to spoil the anthology so I'll just discuss the first book: “Piece of Mind” by L.R. Braden is a quick read that both fascinated and intrigued me. I was drawn in by her writing, her imagination, and the creativity in her story. The author's take on the collapse of earth and a rather interesting method of trying to save humanity kept me interested and engaged.

All of the books in this anthology are well-written, intriguing, and creative. I was drawn to the different worlds, characters, and themes. The authors of all but one of the stories are new to me and I'm glad I took a chance on Far, Far Away. I now have a whole bunch of new authors to get lost in.

I requested a copy of this book to read.

Paranormal Romance Review ~ Raising a Demon (Eden Valley #1) by Amy Cissell ~ #PNR @ACissellWrites #PWF

A magical new paranormal romance series from USA Today Bestselling Author Amy Cissell, author of the Eleanor Morgan novels and the Oracle Bay series.

Being a single mother has its challenges, but Evie had never imagined that “the talk” would involve Ouija boards and pentagrams.

Evelyn Addams had settled into a comfortable but unexciting life as a single mother in small-town Eden Valley. The gossip had died down and her daughter Liliana was gearing up for her tenth birthday and getting more independent by the day. She had everything she needed. A great kid, fantastic friends, and a decent job. She was forty-three, fabulous, and didn’t need a man to complete her.

But between Evie’s sudden onset accidental supernatural shoplifting and catching her daughter trying to summon a demon to grant three wishes, Evie knows that not only has she neglected some aspects of Lily’s mythological education, but that her façades of strength and normalcy aren’t as firm as she’d thought. Why else would Lily ask a demon to make her mother happy and bring back the father she never knew?

After a series of strange phenomena pop up around town, Luc, her summer fling from almost eleven years ago, walks back into their lives just in time for Lily’s tenth birthday party. Life’s about to get way more interesting than any woman in her 40s wants as Evie is forced to reevaluate everything she thought she wanted. Can she let go of the past and take another chance on the man she fell for more than a decade ago? And will she be able to accept the side effects that come with raising a demon’s daughter?

My Review:

Evelyn "Evie" Addams is the single mom to Lily, an almost 10-year-old girl. Her father was a fly-by-night summer fling who blew out of town before she could tell him he was going to be a dad. As the birthday girl's big day gets closer, Evie and Lily's lives begin to get weird. Evie can summon things just by wishing it and she catches Lily trying to summon a demon. Taking the demon summoning in stride, Evie goes about business as usual until other paranormal events begin to occur and the man who left her almost 11 years ago walks back into her life.

Raising a Demon is a fun paranormal book. With likable characters, an interesting plot, and wonderful writing, I had a hard time putting the book down. The author provided descriptive prose easy to imagine and get lost in as I read along. I loved the demon theme and the best part about is the author didn't go all hard core, but the story isn't all fluffy either.

The only real issue I had was how Lily was written. She's a 10-year-old through most of the book. That age is impressionable, and Evie makes sure she's being raised with manners and a really decent upbringing. Sure, Lily is mouthy and such but she's correctable and Evie is firm with her. However, at the end of the book, Lily lets the "f" word fly a couple times and no one, not even her parents, bats an eye. A simple rebuke would have appeased my appalled expression. I swear like a sailor and those words and phrases don't offend me - but reading a 10-year-old use them like they are everyday words was shocking.

This story is part of the Paranormal Women's Fiction world where the female lead is 40 or older. Evie is a wonderful character throughout the book. She's strong, capable, and likeable. Other than her supernatural demon gifts, she's easy to relate to and I enjoyed meeting and getting to know her. The secondary characters are written well and add enjoyment and additional layers to Raising a Demon. I look forward to book 2.

Paranormal Women's Fiction Review ~ Fate Interrupted by Elizabeth Hunter @EHunterWrites #PWF ~ Moonstone Cove, Book 3

She had her life all planned out; fate had other ideas.

Fate Interrupted is an all new paranormal women's fiction novel in the Moonstone Cove series from USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Hunter

About Fate Interrupted:

How did an accomplished Southern businesswoman, wife, and mother end up living on California’s Central Coast, newly divorced, working for a stubborn winemaker, and wrestling with sudden psychic powers?

Megan Carpenter asks herself that same question nearly every day.

She’s working her way back to the business world and starting her own event-planning business, but fate keeps throwing Megan curveballs. Her ex has an unexpected new girlfriend, her telekinetic powers keep short-circuiting, and her self-control—at least when it comes to her boss, Nico Dusi—is slipping.

Thank goodness she has the two best friends in the world. With Katherine and Toni at her side, Megan is determined to keep her plans on track even when an unexpected theft at the winery threatens the new business she’s building.

When Nico asks Megan, Toni, and Katherine for help finding the thief, life in Moonstone Cove gets even more mind-bending. Experimental grape clones, industrial espionage, and bizarre bloodstains. Even for three psychic friends, this mystery may be more than they can handle on their own.

Fate Interrupted is the third book in Moonstone Cove, a paranormal women’s fiction series by USA Today bestseller Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Glimmer Lake series and the Elemental Legacy.

My Review:

Fate Interrupted is the third book in Elizabeth Hunter's Moonstone Cove series. A Paranormal Women's Fiction novel, Fate Interrupted follows the lives of three unlikely friends who cannot imagine their lives without one another. Oh, they also have psychic abilities, too. Katherine, Toni, and Megan are 40-something women, each in a different stage of their lives. These characters are closer to my age, life experiences, and lifestyle; although, I lack the supernatural capabilities.

This book focuses on Megan, though there is no shortage of Katherine or Toni. She works for Toni's cousin, Nico Dusi, as an event planner. While she navigates growing feelings for her boss, she also has 3 teenage children to focus on and one extremely needy ex-husband. When theft occurs at the winery, Nico requests the help of Moonstone's psychic trio and things really get interesting.

This book is amazing, just like the first two in the series. The characters are wonderful, relatable, and fun. The setting is great, and the world building is done so well I could picture the entire story as I read along. The mystery of the stolen vines and all that went along with it kept me on my toes. I was not expecting the plot twist near the end. I love the author's writing style. All of Elizabeth's novels reach deep within my emotional center and manage to trigger reactionary responses.
